I’ve not followed-up.
There are at least ten people I’ve met over the past year that I need to reach out to, to say hello, ask how they are doing, and possibly set up lunch or a coffee.
In the fast-paced world of professional services it’s easy to get caught up in immediate “must be done asap” tasks. However, one crucial habit that every professional should cultivate is the art of the follow-up.
Whether you’ve just met someone at a networking event, pitched new business, lost an opportunity, or had a client walk away, follow-up is key.
I am trying to get better about this myself.
Here’s why:
1. Situations Change
Just because an opportunity didn’t pan out today doesn’t mean it’s gone forever. Companies evolve, needs shift, and what wasn’t a business fit a few months ago might be perfect now. Your timely follow-up can be the reminder a potential client or friend needs.
2. People Move
Your points of contact may change jobs, switch industries, or climb the corporate ladder. By staying in touch, you position yourself as a consistent, reliable presence, making it more likely they’ll think of you when new opportunities arise.
3. Be Gracious, Be Kind
Following up isn’t just about business. It’s about building and maintaining relationships. A gracious note, a kind word, and genuine interest can make a lasting impression. It helps your reputation, and may provide good word of mouth for other opportunities. but it also contributes to a more connected, kinder professional community.
Remember, in most lines of work, relationships are everything.
By following up, you not only keep doors open but also build bridges that can support your career for years to come. Let’s make the world a little smaller and a lot more connected, one follow-up at a time.
