Teaching runs in my family.
Wednesday night I had the pleasure of speaking at Chief, and it reminded me why I love these conversations so much.
My mother was one of three sisters, and all three became teachers. She eventually moved into real estate, selling and flipping houses, but she never lost that teaching mindset. She always believed in passing along what she knew. I think that stayed with me.
Sharing what you know matters. It helps people sidestep hard lessons, shortens the learning curve, and builds something bigger than any one career.
Yes, being seen as an expert in your field can be a benefit. But what I find most rewarding about speaking about business development is the moment something lands for someone in the room.
If you have been thinking about speaking or teaching and have not taken the step yet: just say yes to the first opportunity. The nerves are real, but they fade. What stays is the connection you make and the confidence you build every single time you do it.
You never know which idea, which story, or which piece of hard-won advice will be the one that shifts someone’s thinking.
That is what keeps me coming back. If you have knowledge to share, share it.
The ripple effects are wider than you think.
Thank you to Kara O’Brien at Practising Law Institute (PLI) and Nicole Petrie at Proskauer Rose LLP, for making this special evening possible!
